DuPont - Coronavirus PPE Considerations

A new coronavirus has caused several deaths in China and has now spread to several other countries, including the United States. This has led to an increased and urgent interest in determining the appropriate PPE ensemble for people who have a potential exposure risk to a coronavirus. As information changes rapidly, please visit www.cdc.gov or www.who.int for the latest information on the coronavirus outbreak.

IMPORTANT: It is imperative for end users/PPE wearers to conduct a hazard assessment prior to potential exposure, to determine the appropriate level of ensemble protection.

Biosafety levels are used by response organizations to categorize levels of biohazard containment and protection, and related PPE guidance.

Classification: Biosafety Level 1

Containment: Facility design, equipment, work practices and PPE used for Risk Group 1 organisms

  • (Minimal containment) such as E. coli and B. subtilis.

Classification: Biosafety Level 2

Containment: Facility design, equipment, work practices and PPE used for Risk Group 2 organisms; No respiratory protection

  • (Moderate containment) such as Bloodborne Pathogens and Legionella.

Classification: Biosafety Level 3

Containment: Facility design, equipment, work practices and PPE used for RG3 organisms; Respiratory protection, as needed

  • (Substantial containment) such as M. tuberculosis and B. anthracis and Coronaviruses.

Classification: Biosafety Level 4

Containment: Facility design, equipment, work practices and PPE used for RG4 organisms

  • (High containment) such as Ebola virus and Marburg virus.
