Aptitude for Ineptitude

“The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle.” – Stapp’s Law

Colonel John Stapp, a U.S. Air Force officer, spent part of his career in the late 1940s studying the effects of rapid acceleration and deceleration on the human body by observing pilots strapped to rocket sleds. He worked alongside an engineer named Edward Murphy who’s saying was also popularized by Stapp as Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”

Let’s face it: people make mistakes. Sometimes, just the fact that we made it home ok at the end of the day could be considered “an incredible miracle”. Are you observing the people and surroundings at your job site to make safety a priority? It might be as simple as making sure there are stocked first-aid kits or having adequate signage at your jobsite. Safety isn’t just up to the Safety Manager on duty; it’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure that our “aptitude for ineptitude” doesn’t get in the way of our safety!
